anyone else too dumb/scared to even try to install Linux on their pc? I always think what if I fail and the computer is bricked, I don't have the money for Geek Squad.
>>
Only use linux if you're doing AI stuff.
Literally no workflow or use case that's better on linux, it's all the same on windows.
Esp. with gaming.
Also, just troubleshoot with AI, even experienced users will fuck something up but with AI that's never happened to me.

clone your hard drive to another drive, then give it a try.
backups make life easy, froggu

Installing any modern distro is as easy, if not easier than installing Windows.
>>
You can't brick the computer as long as you're not fucking with BIOS and to a lesser extent the bootloader
>>
>>110235801
Install Linux on a separate drive so you can physically remove your Windows drive when you decide to switch permanently.

i am afraid of updating my bios
>>
There's no reason to update bios. I have never updated bios and I've been using computers of all sorts all my life.
>>
>>110235801
I look at steam discussions/reviews enough to know linux isn't worth using

Start with installing it in VirtualBox, dude. As a bonus, you can try as many distros as you like very fast.

>>
>>110236068
that's a nice pc, you wouldn't gain anything at all
linux makes older amd cards faster not the latest one. it's also good for intel integrated graphics.
>>
>>110236038
Unless you're using AMDjeet's shit hardware then you'll see a 10%-20% hit in performance on a desktop. Not worth it IMO, the time you spend tinker trannying a Linux desktop you could've just gotgud at windows instead.
>>
>>110236096
are you one of those nvidia retards?
>>
>>110235801
desktop linux sucks and is not worth your time, if you just want to fuck around in a linux environment, install wsl, windows is far better for work, game etc

sleep still doesn't work on linux
>>
>>110236185
I plan on moving desktop from windows to Mint when 23 rolls out.
>>
>>110235801
installing linux has been piss easy for a decade now, its not harder than windows. arguably easier they handhold you every step of the way, you can look up how to install mint on youtube and follow along
>>
>>110236197
which gigabyte motherboard do you have?
the only pc out of the dozen I have where sleep doesn't work (without the fix that took a google search and 30 seconds)
>>
>>110236204
Why not move now?
>>
>>110236012
there's no reason until there is. there's been a few times where i actually needed to, like for example i needed an update to move from a ryzen 5000 series cpu to a 7000 series. like the motherboard didn't support 7000 series chips without the update. i hear intel likes to change socket every generation so maybe it's not an option there, idk, i haven't used intel cpus since bentium 4
>>
>>110236222
I don't know. No hurry. I have Mint on laptop. And new installer will have luks and secure boot outta box so eh.
>>
>>110235801
nah that only happens for custom roms in android, pc won't brick as long as you have an usb stick with windows for emergency
>>
>>110235801
i'm stuck with windows. even windows 7.
i'm tired how shitty linux is. i've used linux in past. knoppix, slackware, fedora, ubuntu (when you still can request a cd, they will send u a free ubuntu).

two decades, i'd argue. my first install in 2004 was super easy, even easier than windows actually since most hardware was supported ootb without needing to go find drivers for everything
2006 was 20 years ago (i know), and by then we already had things like ubuntu lts
>>
>>110236244
forgot to say, you can also practice in a virtual machine
>>
>>110236256
Or you can just use live installation off usb.
>>
Notice how everyone says "linux is great for this, linux is great for that" yet nobody ever posts screenshots of linux doing those things, it's only a picture of the desktop.

it was easy but not easier than windows, you had to setup a swap partition etc, now its done automatically

It's impossible to brick a computer in 2027-1/6.

What benefit does linux have over a debloated windows that doesn't include decade old hardware? Don't even say shit about privacy if you have a modern smartphone or a newer car either.

Pull a trash laptop out of the dumpster or get one off ebay for $40, then play around with linux on that. Then that gives you a way to learn by experience without risking a computer that you care about.

There's more than enough good games that have come out since then, can't think fo a single game from that era I would even want to play now

YOUR software needs

k?

literally doesn't matter unless you're always staring at your desktop, which i guess since that's all linux is good for makes sense why you people care so much about it

idk, i really like my hyprland. is there anything even close to that on windows?
