As far as I can tell there are no real valid reason to use GitHub other than the fact that everyone else uses it.

I personally use GitLab because it's large enough where it won't suddenly die, and they seem to offer some of the most generous free storage for LFS projects.

Self hosted Gitea for actual development, infrequent pushes to Github for version updates since I lack the bandwidth to host for the entire world. I prefer the vertical column setup that Gitea and Github have over the fold out left menu Gitlab has.
