Why is Rust taking over lately?Everybody is using it nowadayshttps://cybernews.com/tech/discord-app-overhaul/?content=post
Because it's a solid programming language. Very secure, too.
finally
>>110260226you worthless faggots refused to make your own servers and electron clients and now all your chats belong to the jews
>>110260236I have never used Rust, I am programming in TypeScript at work and even at home for hobby projects. I wonder how Rust would work if I would use it for a project with a javascript frontend and a rust backend
>>110260226people are lemmings, they only do things because they're trendy and popular, rust is the only popular "low level" language anyone is willing to talk about, C is everywhere but it's not trendy, it's also associated with boomers and chuds, and trans people make up the majority of hobbyist programmers these days, they will not be touching C code or creating new C projects.
>>110260226claims to be retardproof, which gels nicely with bottom barrel jeet labor
>>110260226Let me guess they are using AI for this?
web version is still gonna be dogshit probably
>>110260267You could likely have Claude generate it for you for free - just ask it.
>>110260307HRT really was as much of a distaster to autistic people like crack was to blacks.
>>110260267>>110260226rust is good with performance, very safe to code with, and AI is really good at coding with it because it can check it's own work quicklyit's really not that bad
>>110260267If your backend is IO-bound(which is most of them) then you will get no significant advantage at cost of significant cognitive overhead if you use Rust over TypeScript. It only really makes sense to do this if for example you have already sizable Rust project and want to add simple front end to it(eg status page). If you want to try Rust, just pick something more aligned with systems programming. A compression or cryptographic library, renderer, cli utility, physics simulation, etc. Webdev in Rust in general is difficult (especially async) and too rigid for typical web tasks/workflows.
>>110260307>C is everywhere but it's not trendy,Can you name any new notable C project that was started in this decade?Just because there is tons of legacy C projects doesn't mean it's suitable for greenfield projects.

>>110260226inb4 it's a rust wrapper for a webview
Because AI became good enough to crank it out and it's better, that's it.No one has actually learned how to code in rust.
>>110260226They're using Tauri. "Rust" isn't the way to really describe it more than C++ is how to describe Electron. You're using Javascript, CSS, HTML. Electron is an embedded Chromium instance as a standalone so you can build your app with the same exact code you use for your website. That of course is heavy.Deno Desktop and Tauri do the same thing, except every operating system now has it's own included browser, usually it's own chromium or webkit; and Deno and Tauri now just use them natively. You're not really using Rust you're still just building a website posing as an app. Tauri is just made in Rust. That's like calling websites C++ because you open them with a C++ chrome browser.

>>110260226And what about Steam?
>>110262486They're using GPUI, retard.
>>110260226Because claude code mainly outputs code in rust.
>>110262436I wouldn't be surprised.Aren't all their random mini games and integration basically glorified iframes? How are they planning to port it to native without embedding webview anyway.
>>110260226Rust gives you the performance benefits of rewriting something in C++, without as much of the security implications. Discord is written in Electron, which is dogshit because it embeds an entire copy of Chrome in your application. So now it's going to be just native machine code with none of the bloat.
>>110262140python has the most training data but most of it is arguably poor data relative to rust (tons of programs are made with really shitty python for random projects that have no real utility)meanwhile rust, love it or hate it, had years of very high quality programming sources kept online and public because the troons loved using it to code all this shitalso python isn't really that fast, especially when compared to rust and C
>>110262140You read the first word of that AI summary, and nothing else. THERE ARE JUST TWO SENTENCES IN THAT SUMMARY, TRY READING THE WHOLE THING.>AI is good at writing Rustand>Rust is good for writing AIAre two completely different concepts. Thanks for playing!
Rust was a PITA to code by hand due to how pedantic the compiler was. You make one small change and suddenly you have to refactor half your code base. All the downsides are now gone with LLMs doing the grudge work and Rust's safety guarantees helping guide the LLM to not fuck things up.>>110260307What C is associated with is security flaws due to use after free, buffer overruns etc
>>110262549Only normalfags use that.
>>110262549what about it?I'm playing a game on it btw with recording on
>>110262745>>110262140furthermore, the quantity of training data becomes less useful as models get smarter, we already have studies showing that most languages are basically the same performance in smart-enough AI because it can reason equally in each. Thus the main differentiation becomes the actual nature of the code itself. This is where rust becomes useful as it corrects the AI responsively and efficiently compared to other languages, and also allows the agent to make less mistakes as it can be guided with rails more often
>>110260226Rust makes it a colossal pain in the ass to get something building. That feedback loop of errors is particularly well suited for AI.JS webshit used to be the cheapest and laziest to maintain. Now they have the option of throwing AI at rust for a lazy performance improvement and PR win.Nobody at these companies is actually writing rust. If people were switching to it because it was broadly liked, it would have happened years ago instead of now. Even C/C++, an equally performant language requiring much less developer effort to maintain than rust, was only used in places where speed was absolutely critical.
>>110261606>this decade?I started thinking of projects from the 2010s because it does not feel like we are already more than halfway through another decadewtf where has the time gone
>>110260236wait until you start hearing about the supply chain attacks because of cargo lmao
>>110262843>requiring much less developer effort to maintain than rust
>>110262887Depending if you trust Sonatype or StepSecurity, NPM accounts for 75-90% of EVERY supply chain attack. Of all the shit to lay at Rust's feet, supply chain attacks aren't it. Not yet, anyway.
>>110260226I jokingly said a month ago that everything will be rewritten in rust because of ai. /g/ got extremely angry.looks like im right again
>>110262913There are lots of people on earth that can read JS code. You can develop a project in it in a way so it's readable for new devs.Practically nobody can read Rust.
>>110260226I only use it because Qwen seems to have have an oddly easy time with it, even moreso than C++. I often have to tard wrangle it because it doesn't know the modules/structs/enums by memory but otherwise it often 1-shots whatever I ask out of it.
>>11026160510/10 will repost again
love that webdevs suddenly value performance when they don't have to do the work writing it.
>>110263044evidently humanslop didn't care about performance and blot, and thus the AI has to actually do properly formatted scripting to fix itit seems that a lot of programmers were basically using their forehead to hammer nails all this time, at least the cheap indian ones at most companies...
>>110262140
>>110263044There's nothing strange about this tho. The difference between webdevs and cniles is that the format actually get shit done and release products while the latter whine about the former not caring about le heckin' performance.
>>110263066Barely a few years ago web shitters were convinced the web and electron were the future.Suddenly they can slop up rust code, and now they scurry back and pretend to champion performance.>>110263057>a lot of programmers were basically using their forehead to hammer nails all this time,Forehead Programmers is a very apt term for much of the field honestly.
>>110260226Discord is written in JavaScript, do you think people who write in java know how to make memory secure software? They need all the help they can get and rust is that help.
>>110262549>WebhelperThats chromium
>>110260226They had already been experimenting with rust but LLMs weren't advanced enough at the time. Now they're just picking up where they left off
>>110260226everything's going to be Rust because this is the language the AI model creators will mainly focus on.at the end of the 2030s at least 70% of Windows will be written in rust.
>>110261606Ntahttps://github.com/ggml-org/llama.cppFun fact. It was originally created because the head maintainer wanted to run LLMs on his MacBook, and now Apple Silicon is one of the best platforms to run local models on from a price to performance and convenience perspective.
nobody actually likes writing rust code. it is compiled natively unlike electron jeet shit so it's bound to be more performant, and now that you can just tell clankers to rewrite your app in a different language there's no reason not to
>>110260226Its just another step in the continuing process of total destruction. Everything is being destroyed.
>>110263569How?
>>110263569No, if anything, it's a recovery. Software in the 2010s became enshittified at an alarming rate because everything had to cater to Indian coders. Now with AI they are obsolete and we can start having good software again.
>>110260226Because AI needs a sub layer of determinism, harnesses for example do thatNow think that at the programming language level which also can be used even for system programming
>>110263648Software will not get better, they will find new ways of making it even worse, it will never go back to the way it was before.
>>110262953Rust is fairly easy to read, until you get into macros
>>110263360That's C++
>>110260226>Why is Rust taking over lately?Rust is a performant and relatively safe language but it is annoying as fuck to use. Luckly now we have very good online and even offline agents that translate entire code bases to Rust, bypassing the annoying part. So why not use it? Rust also has excellent compiler feedback and debbuging tools, making agent use even more attractive. The main reason electron, java, qt and many of those so called "cross-platform" and "high level" programming languages and frameworks are chosen is so that they reduce the ammount of coding HUMANS do. The trade off is performance and bloat (and potentially security). But with LLMs, it makes very little sense to cut corner using bloated frameworks.
>>110263831>it is annoying as fuck to use.Skill issue
>>110260226It's the language a LLM would like to use. A unforgiving compiler which rewards verbosity with strong gaurentees, as a LLM you don't mind verbosity. Also a lot of existing training data, especially on github.
