What's good Heraldry design?

I want to design a coat for me as a person and perhaps one for my family.

Even on that, I don't know the rules, for example, should they be the same? Should they converge? Be totally different? One use the other?

I know there are color rules too.

If today's generation would design their own heraldry it would all be simple shapes, nothing complex, just like modern flag design. It's ugly and boring and it lacks depth.
