I haven't given much thought to the importance of race until my family suggested I take a DNA test. Since I possess both of my parents DNA, my results indirectly reveal their ancestry as well; hence why they elected me to be the family guinea pig.I'm obviously aware of certain subcommunities and ideologies that put race on a pedestal, but why? Why is race important?
Same reason people put family on a pedestal. Race is essentially like an extended family.

Many people, for example, looking at modern-day Egypt, would say that Egyptians are inferior, yet they reached high levels of civilization while Northern Europeans were still living in mud huts. Race is a poorly defined construct anyway; someone's ethnic or cultural background is going to paint a much more informative picture of them than their skin color alone. That being said, living in a highly multicultural setting my whole life, I have come to the conclusion that people of 100% African descent are unfortunately not as intelligent as other humans. Some ethnic groups are taller or faster or smarter or can hold their breath longer, and some must necessarily be shorter or slower or dumber. It doesn't make them subhuman, it doesn't even entail them being dumb on an individual level. I've met African people and Black Americans who are very smart. This is the limitation of racial thinking. There's no heuristic for determining someone's worth without actually getting to know them

As two other posters have already pointed out it seems that sub-Saharan Africans are just dumber and maybe even incapable of creating higher civilization. It could be that they are simply on a genetic level more predisposed to being impulse, less capable of delayed gratification and academically dumber on average compared to other races. If this is the case then you'll have to continuously pump in disproportionate amount of resources into this race only to repeatedly get sub-par results, which can obviously foster resentment from the other races who don't want to pay more resources to an out-group.
Race is an extended family
Individuals often prefer other individuals who are more genetically close to them (their tribe) This is also true not only for humans but also for animals. Now, its true that certain populations present characteristics that others don't, but I would say most of these characteristics can be developed or suppressed depending on the environment the individual develops For example, intelligence. What would be the difference in it between a Bantu and a Germanic/Slav prehistoric tribes? Both of them knew how to work iron and agriculture, yet nowadays Germanics have much more intelligence than Bantus. Kushites, who had around half SSA (Nilotic) and half Eurasian (Natufian) ancestry still developed a very high quality civilization since they were in constant contact with the middle east civilizations.
