Go to any jam band concert or big college campus and there’s still hippie LARPers a half century after the movement faded, but the original thing died like other pop culture movements—because it became cliche and uncool. Disco, punk, hip hop, preppy and other subcultures supplanted hippiedom as the old farts moved into middle age and kids wanted something fresh. It lasted longer in middle America as it took longer to arrive and cultural change moved slower pre internet. Well into the 80s you’d see dudes with unironic shaggy hair, faded jeans, cheap weed and classic rawk music after their urban and upscale peers had long since moved on.
