His armies were organized to travel very light for maximum mobility and because they very active in Western and Central Europe, they could always live off the land. But that wasn't possible in the flat land in Russia. He also couldn't have predicted Russia would just cheat and not accept a peace deal, despite having negative war score and having their capital occupied, which would have qualified Napoleon to at least enforce one of his war goals.
