They had the most prepared army and the furthest militarized civilian society. Once their enemies caught up in militarization they lost its advantages and could not replicate the success of early war.

the realistic way they could have won if by spamming u-boats early war. By 42 it's too late to win the u-boat war, they have to knock the UK out of the war early and hope the lack of lend-lease lets the Russians fall, and those u-boats really had to be built a lot earlier.
Probably the latest that they might conceivably had had a chance is May of 41. Bismarck caused such a panic because the RN only had a few ships fast enough to catch her, and most of those except Hood were hopeless. Still, Hood and Bismarck both sank due to some very lucky shots. If Bismarck had survived, and the Germans get off some good operations with Tirpitz/etc too, then maybe they could beat the RN. Even that is a long-shot though, and doing it so late means even if it works they're still probably 6 months or a year into Barbarossa by then.
