How do historians interpret old songs by black singers in which they call black people nigger, coon, darkies.

There was an entire genre of music between 1870-1910 where songs were written in the perspective of a black character and were racial caricatures. But what is suprising is that there were many composers that were black themselves but wrote songs in which black people were called nigger darkies.

How is this explained by historians?
