Why was there such a massive southern han diaspora here? Mostly hokkien at first but then later on there was a mining boom and a bunch of cantonese and hakka too. Weren't the Japanese a maritime people? Why didnt they establish themselves? The greeks colonized the med, the italians, the phoenicians. The dutch had colonies, the English and Portuguese. Why didnt the maritime Japs do the same?

The Japanese really weren't much of a maritime people before the modern era and were more interested in pirate raids than in establishing colonies.

Pirate raids don't preclude establishing colonies, I would suppose the problem is that their only worthwhile target was China who was also too strong and densely settled to colonise.
