>>18492091Harold wins but spends the rest of his ruling days to rule over an entrenched Anglo-Saxon nobility that remains fractured. France centralizes much more rapidly than England and dominates all of western Europe. England plays a much more diminished role throughout history and the English language, never having been infused with so much French to become an incredibly flexible hybrid language, retains much more of its Germanic core.

France wins the 1870 war
>>18492260The 2nd French Empire's victory over Prussia was considered by many to be a perfect example of a phyrric victory.Napoleon III's stunning victory at Sedan-and the subsequent capture of Wilhelm I-lead many of the southern German states to declare openly against what became known as the War of Prussian Aggression. In Paris, there were victory parades throughout the city; crowds swarmed the streets and both commoner and aristocrat alike sang songs of celebration. The widespread revelry allowed the small minority of Republican radicals to move relatively unseen-some disguised as soldiers, others as jubilant patriots. When news spread that Empress Eugénie had been murdered by those calling for an end to "Bonaparte's Bluster", chaos followed. Furious soldiers turned their rifles on the commoners, who in turn rioted across the capitol. Napoleon III returned to a nation in turmoil, ripping itself apart over a revolution which had yet to even begin. His son, Louis-Napoléon, was set upon by Belgian nationalists who believed that a French victory over Prussia would lead to an attempt to realise the ill-fated "natural borders of France."In an attempt to restore order, the grief stricken Napoleon III reneged on his promise of a "Liberal Empire"; with the unwavering loyalty of the military, he took a heavy-handed approach to any pockets of dissent regardless of their political affiliations. When his health began to worsen in 1873, the lack of an heir lead to an inevitable crisis of succession. A compromise was made with the moderate monarchists and the republicans to see the Empire transition simply to the "3rd Republic", a convoluted and bloated blend of conservative and liberal policies. Hamstrung by its own stagnant and unstable government, it was wholly unready to deal with both the Bonapartist revolt and the Bavarian ascension, ceding Alsace-Lorraine to Greater Bavaria and selling its colonial holdings to Italy to balance the budget.

>>18492105>>18492369I didn't post the first one, but that's what I would have chosen too. But why would the Soviets come into power at all? If Alexander II lives, he would have been able to institute his planned reforms for serfs, and Alexander III/Nicholas II wouldn't have been as harsh as they were. Sure, World War I would still happen, but I doubt that the conditions would have been right for the Soviets to take power.

>>18492792I wouldn't say that it distorts the wish.... But it usually gives the user **exactly** what they asked for, with some serious unexpected complications that would naturally come with that wish. Complications that should have been seen, if they were looking at that wish rationally beforehand.
