I'm clueless on the matter but I'm willing to bet it existed partly because past societies recognized some men and women had dispositions that were better suited for simply paying for sex than getting married and being parents. Another guess I have is that past societies understood both marriage and prostitution represented things in life men needed to have a positive connection with for the sake of society's well being.
