Now that the dust has settled, what do we think of the Japanese Empire?
Good effort but it was too reckless and lacked clear direction
Justified crash out. They were consistently shit on by the Western powers throughout their entire ascendency>made to open ports against will>actively study and adopt western reforms>ignored>btfo china>made to give back most of their gains under threat of invasion>russia tries to kick their shit in>get royally btfo'd so hard the entire western world clutches its pearls>join ww1 on team good guy>win>ask the allies to be treat as equals>"australia said they'll chimp out if we declare you equal (without actually even implementing anything) so no, you're officially, legally not equal">after all this shit your society is still beta orbiters during the taisho democracy>finally a bunch of officers decide sucking western dick to receive back nothing but contempt is retarded>government gradually gets co-opted by these officers>btfo china again>cue western pearl clutching>japan doesn't even threaten western colonies, but japanese imperialism isn't allowed in china, only western imperialism>finally the us says if they don't gtfo china rn it's go time>well we obviously can't pull 1 million troops out of china, and we obviously can't beat the us, so we'll just achieve one epic victory against them and agree to go back to status quo>kill less than 100 us civillians during the entire war>get firebombed killing 300,000 civilians>get nuked twice killing another 100,000 civilians>forced to become us cocksleeve>economy starts doing good >western pearl clutching AGAIN>forced to sign plaza accords>entire economy stagnates foreverThe story of Japan is a nation pulling itself up by the bootstraps and being hated for it.

>>18492679their wanton and shockingly brutal warmongering in China was unjustifiable imperialism. Japan claimed they were freeing asia for asians but they were in fact more brutal imperialists than any of the europeans had been in asia. So it was just a naked and nihilistic war of the strong attacking the weak. Then they attacked American, which was far, FAR, stronger than they could ever be simply because they looked at the philippines on the map and said it cut their empire in two, war with the US was inevitable anyway, so might as well just get to it. Americans are soft and decadent anyway, so they won't put up much of a fight.Control of the Japanese home islands, Okinawa, Taiwan, Korea, and Manchukuo as a client state was enough for Japan to be a powerful and rich nation. They could have kept all that, and they didn't need more. Instead they commit national suicide, knowing full well that was what they were doing when they attacked America without any plan of how to defeat it.
>>18492679>Now that the dust has settled, what do we think of the Japanese Empire? They should have captured Hawaii in 1941. They'd have still lost the war eventually but leaving it in the hands of the Americans was flat out stupid.

>>18492679Their ideology was literally KILL THEM ALL.>The Three Alls policy (Japanese: 三光作戦, Hepburn: Sankō Sakusen; Chinese: 三光政策; pinyin: Sānguāng Zhèngcè) was the Japanese scorched-earth policy (Japanese: 燼滅作戦, Hepburn: Jinmetsu Sakusen) adopted in China during World War II, the three "alls" being "kill all, burn all, loot all". This policy was designed as retaliation against the Chinese for the Communist-led Hundred Regiments Offensive in December 1940>The policy targeted suspected guerrilla base areas and used extreme measures to eliminate their inhabitants in order to transform them into "unpopulated zones" (mujin chiku, or a "no-man's-land")>Japanese tactics included indiscriminate massacres, destroying entire villages, forced starvation, and the widespread deployment of chemical weapons against rural populations. Japanese forces also targeted young men to deny Communist forces potential recruits; those not killed immediately were conscripted into forced labour units. In addition, Japanese troops stripped the countryside of their food stores and razed crop fields, deliberately engineering food shortages to starve the civilian population into submission>Japanese troops had already launched violent pacification measures since 1938 in Hebei, and Major General Ryūkichi Tanaka had formalized the campaigns in 1940. General Yasuji Okamura escalated these anti-partisan drives following the Hundred Regiments Offensive, with his forces doubling in size and conducting five pacification campaigns between 1941 and 1942 in Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi, Henan and Charhar. Pacification drives continued well into March of 1945, but they ultimately failed in securing North China>The Three Alls Policy killed millions of Chinese civilians. Chinese Communists recorded that the populations of their base areas dropped from 44,000,000 to 25,000,000. Some historians have characterized the Japanese campaigns as genocidal in their scale and intent
>>18494253And they were even more megalomaniacal than the Nazis.>As the Japanese went from victory to victory, Tojo and the rest of the Japanese elite were gripped by what the Japanese called "victory disease," as the entire elite was caught up in a state of hubris, believing Japan was invincible and the war was as good as won. By May 1942, Tojo approved a set of "non-negotiable" demands to be presented once the Allies sued for peace that allowed Japan to keep everything it already conquered while assuming possession of considerably more. Under such demands, Japan would assume control of the following territories:>the British Crown colonies of India and Honduras as well as the British dominions of Australia, Australian New Guinea, Ceylon, New Zealand, British Columbia and the Yukon Territory>the American state of Washington and the American territories of Alaska and Hawaii>most of Latin America including Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the rest of the West Indies>Additionally, Tojo wanted all of China to be under the rule of the puppet Wang Jingwei and planned to buy Macau and East Timor from Portugal and to create new puppet kingdoms in Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaya. As the Burmese had proved to be enthusiastic collaborators in the "New Order in Asia," the new Burmese kingdom would be allowed to annex much of north-east India as a reward. The Navy, for its part, demanded that Japan take New Caledonia, Fiji, and Samoa
>>18494003>war with the US was inevitableNot really. If they never went beyong Manchuria in China, and attacked the USSR instead of going against western colonies, the States wouldn't have many reasons for attacking them.
>>18492679What I like about WW2 is countries just irresponsibly went for it. Germany and Japan were not the strongest or the most productive countries in the world by any metric, not even close, but they acted like they were controlled by a player in a 4X game for like 10 years, just seeing how far they could go before their economic limitations caught up with them. "Oh, so that's how far Japan can get with luck and a complete disregard for long term consequences."

>>18492679Comically evil shithole that got BTFO and exposed as a paper tiger. Could only win against cut off colonial garrisons and Chinese peasants wielding swords and spears
>>18494262My point was not that it was inevitable, but that Japan attacked America because they saw American control of the Philippines as a threat and thought war with America was inevitable. I agree with you that it wasn't inevitable, and while the US had been very upset with Japan for attacking China in 1931, they were not going to do anything about it. If they had limited their conquest to Manchuria and remained neutral in ww2 I don't think there would have ever been a war between the US and Japan. But of course they thought they deserved to be the sole masters of Asia and the Pacific, and that did put them on a collision course with the US.

>>18494656the Soviet Army cut through the IJA in Manchuria in 1945 with ease. The Japanese forces were totally devastated. The IJA was always a second rate army that could only beat colonial garrisons and third rate armies like China's.

A complete clusterfuck of megalomanic ambitions, a warning example of what happens when you let your armed forces become the leading force in politics. It’s genuinely dazzling to read about how fucked it was, with nationalism-drunk officers just killing political figures left and right pre-war, all that retarded factionalism between different officer groups in Army and Navy, and most telling part is that Tojo’s faction were the fucking moderates of that shitshow. They were bound to bite something that they can’t chew sooner or later and get fucked for it, it wasn’t a sustainable political system.
>>18492679that's not the japanese empire, that's the Great Sphere of Asiatic Co-prosperity. The japanese empire is just the japanese islands and it has this name even today.
