Some say it's proof the Slavic Migrations didn't happen but that's far-fetched. I prefer to believe the simpler option, that the Ecumenical patriarchate was already mass creating new scripts for illiterates, but whoever they were trying to Christianise was by and large wiped out by the plague of Justinian and assimilated into Slavs eventually.
