The real answer is simply that:1 - we've evolved narrower jaws over time, and the number of teeth we have hasn't adjusted for that yet.2. average lifespan for most of human history was 20-30 years so even if it caused you crippling toothache that turned infected and fatal it wasn't more of a natural selection pressure than anything else was.3. prehistoric diets were grains and meat and berries etc, and often full of grit. even in agriculture up until medieval times breads would be full of grit, dirt, sands that wears teeth down more and helps develop a stronger jaw.modern diets in contrast have many more soft, sugary and processed foods that leads to overcrowding.
