Easy for you to say, Percy...

Yes. Normans are singularly responsible for why English words, which have a Germanic origin, are seen as rude, while English words with a French origin are seen as refined.

Imagine hearing someone say they eat "pig meat" instead of pork. Or talk about the female sexual organ as a "cunt" instead of a vagina. This is a direct undeniable consequence of Normans having been the upper class of English society since their conquest.

England might still be called England, but it would be a quite different entity, if the Norwegians won the war or if the Anglo-Saxon king successfully defeated them both. English would be a much more Germanic language, similar to Dutch and German. Keep in mind that Germanic languages used to be very mutually intelligible for a surprisingly long amount of time. The Anglo-Saxons and Vikings were actually capable of talking to each other without interpreters during the Viking age.

England probably would proudly consider itself a Germanic nation even today and not shamefully try to hide their ethnic origins in delusional civic nationalist myths about their population always having been the same and only adopting language, culture and customs from outside ... completely randomly without conquest or war, just ... "trade".

>rule lasted to 1154 and political power till 1204/1215
Normans didn't charge English much.

No one denies that the English are Germanic. If anything, it's overstated since everyone fixates on the Anglo-Saxon part when they're also half Briton.

the biggest change, besides the English language is engaging England in a centuries long conflict with France and away from the Nordic countries.

Try speaking without any Norman-derived terms and you tell me.
