It's now the 9th day in my ongoing series of daily president threads in honor of the USA's 250th anniversaryToday we have William Henry Harrison (2/9/1773 - 4/9/1841), who was president for only 31 days before dying. His death triggered the Succession Crisis and established the vice president assumes the office of the presidency in the event the president dies.He was the first president to die in office, first president to have his photo taken while in office (since lost), oldest president elect at the time (until Ronald Reagan), first Whig president, and longest inauguration speech at over 2 and a half hours.Prior to being the president, he was a well known war hero who fought at Fallen Timbers, Tippecanoe, and the Thames. He was also known for his many "treaties" with the natives (got them drunk and then had them sign shitty agreements), and was basically Tecumseh's archenemy. Notable accomplishments or events during his presidency include: What do you think of guy who die?
>>18500403The 1840s and late 1800s is full of Glup Shitto presidents
>The 1840 election was the first one to use populism on a mass scale. Yet contrary to Whig sloganeering, Harrison was hardly a humble backwoodsman who plowed a field with his own hands before deciding to go to Washington and clean out pompous aristocrats. He was in fact the scion of one of Virginia's First Families and lived in a 20 room mansion in Ohio with servants. Harrison did not even drink cider as campaign propaganda suggested (he was said to favor whiskey instead).
>>18500403>Harrison was the oldest president yet elected at age 68. He stated beforehand that he would only serve a single term. This was not due to his age so much as the fact that the Whig platform advocated the idea of presidents serving a single six year term.
>>18500403given how bad Van Buren's presidency was most of us would probably vote for Harrison if we were around in 1840
>>18500470He actually ran a really clever campaignToo bad he died immediately
Van Buren is a a veteran politician who’ll eventually fix the economy, Harrison is kinda too old (even for government) and his lack of governmental experience will make him ill-equipped for president. Also I think Van Buren reeelection probably moderates the Democrats a bitAlso Harrison “common man” persona was completely fake, sure he was a war hero 30 years earlier but he was basically an aristocrat.
Harrison's death has traditionally been attributed to pneumonia caused by delivering a marathon three hour inaugural address in a rain storm, but modern researchers believe he probably died of gastroenteritis caused by contaminated White House well water.
>>18500403I guess he is the last president born before america existed. Also doesn't he have great grandkids still alive today?
>>18501307That was Tyler, and his last grandson died last year
