Watch any documentary on the British East India Company, British occupation of India, etc everything is based around India being a "Moslem land under British occupation". You even have movies like Victoria and Abdul where Indians are seen as default Muslim. They have names like Abdul, Khalid, Ahmad. They do not have Hindu names. Huge mosques are shown and Islamic culture shown as the default for India. Hindus are rarely mentioned as relevant. Today India is deemed as unwelcoming to Muslims, not part of the Muslim world and dominated by Hindus. Why?

>>18500512When the British were conquering India most of the region was ruled by Muslims. The wealthy landowning elite were also majority Muslim (these dudes would later form Pakistan). Hinduism outside of a few areas, was not represented in the upper classes even though it was the majority of the population overall.

India was a definite area given its geography cutting it off from most outside areas but it wasn’t seen as one state or kingdom for most of its history. Even the large empires that conquered most of it never fully consolidated it. The Brits are also why we view Hinduism as one religion when at least it’s 3 separate religions and at most an almost uncountable amount of local cults and belief systems.
