Today is the anniversary of that fateful day the last vestige of the Roman Empire fell.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_Constantinople

Could they have held out and won the day, and changed the course of history? Or was it always going to happen sooner or later?

If you're asking about the siege of 1453, that was a foregone conclusion and anyone looking at a map could tell.
If you're talking about it falling in general: I'm not seeing any historical determinism there. Byzantium made many errors in its later stages (civil wars, massacre of the latins and provoking the conquest of 1204, not converting to catholicism) and some of the later crusades to relieve them were just unlucky.
>>
It ended in 1806

why dumb niggers add badly generated shitty ai crap to op?
>>
>>18501510
That's nonsense. The frankish empire of charlemagne was a decent attempt at a spiritual revival, but not a continuation. The HRE wasn't even that, it was a large confederation-state with shoes it couldn't fill.
>>
>>18501508
You don't think there was anything the defenders could have done to win?
>>
>>18501516
I have no idea, whether that specific siege was unwinnable. But if they had won, they would have lost the next, and so on.
>>
>>18501513
Yet it lasted for 1000 years, 350~ beyond the eastern and longer than the original empire, republic and kingdom combined.

>constantly promise all kinds of lies, including conversion to Catholicism of the Empire, which strangely gets promised by every single new Emperor, but never fulfilled
>randomly kill Latins every now and then
WHY DOES VENICE BETRAY ME BY ... not sending ENOUGH help, I admit they are helping me, but I WANT MORE!
>>
>>18501623
Yeah, Turkish sultans used the title Kayser-i-Rûm (Emperor of the Romans) and they considered their empire to be the legitimate succesor of Rome

What would it help if they won that one siege, when they had nothing to push against the Turks who were expanding at explosive pace? Byzantium would have withered away either way at that point, it was too late for comebacks.

Hey, pleb, that was two and a half centuries before and wasn't an issue at that time.
>WHY DOES VENICE BETRAY ME BY ... not sending ENOUGH help, I admit they are helping me, but I WANT MORE!
European Christians had sent small artillery pieces to Constantinople for decades as charity while Venetians always looked for the profit in dire situation of Constantinople. Genoans and a few Germans came to help but the Venetians played double game in Anno Domini 1453. Some did defend Constantinople but major reinforcements moved slow and never came in time. Had they come in time Constantinople probably wouldn’t fall that year since torkish naval blockade wasn’t efficient as torks wanted to be.

just kidding, the empire fell at the milvian bridge

>>
>>18501501
The Christians didn't care then.
Constantinople was a shell of it's former self, surrounded by Turkish Empire and reliant on mercenaries. They were like a Round 6 boxer with puffy eyes and lips, barely standing. Someone you looked at and thought 'How the fuck are you still alive.'

And that's the real significance of the Fall of Constantinople. A city that was inevitably going to fall and, when it did, no-one cared.
>>
>>18501516
if we presume that the empire didn't fall in 1204 and accept the palalogoi larp as legit, the turning point was probably black death overlapping with byzantine civil war of 1341-47. it was a super weak rump state afterwards. civil war of 1373-79 turned them into official turkish vassals (kwab). so it was over long before 1453.
>>
1201 is a much more accurate date for the fall of the Roman Empire. That was when Rome ceased to exist in its entirety. 1453 wasn't he same state, it was a successor state claiming to be that previous state. Kinda like some Italian state claiming they are Rome now
