>Paul Tillich, 20th century Lutheran theologian, who made massive contributions to Christian existentialism and metaphysics, was known for his womanizing, open marriage, and frequent visits to brothels and prostitutes. Why are theologians like this? Is there a point where Christian theology becomes so abstract that it just becomes mental masturbation up to a certain point?
>>18501740he's German. end of story.
Tillich himself was basically a pantheist who took apophatic theology to such an extreme he denied traditionalism theism. Other modern theologians find themselves in heresies too. David B. Hart is an open Universalist and also a Neo-Marcionite. He won't admit the latter but he hates the Old Testament to the point where he seems to deny the full divine inspiration of parts of it. You also get guys like William Lane Craig who teach Social Trinitarianism, which is a form of Tritheism, and who openly criticize Nicene Trinitarianism. He is also a Neo-Socinian with Semi-Adoptionist tendies i.e. he thinks that Jesus is only the Son in his human nature and thinks that the divine mind of the Logos replaces what would be the human mind of Jesus. And don't get me started on Open Theists, who want to deny the core attributes of God's nature, namely his omniscience and omnipotence.

>>18501740This guy was a liberal, not a Christian
>>18501788See >>18501816He was not a Christian, a Protestant, or a Lutheran, all of which he plainly rejected. He was a theological liberal who denied the existence of God.
>>18501740Christianity is defined by God in Scripture as not just a belief but our actions as well. If you practice lawlessness and refuse to repent then by definition you are not a Christian, even if you claim to be.
>>18501887Wrong. To be a Christian is to be justified in God's site. We are saved by faith alone, not by works.
>>18501780>is an open Universalistthere were plenty of early church fathers that were universalists though and believed in apokatastasis. the position is a theological elaboration of doctrine, rather than an immediate contradiction of core doctrine>a Neo-Marcionitemany of the stories of the old testament never actually happened. early fathers such as gregory of nyssa saw the old testament as largely allegorical and needing proper interpretationmany christians end up hating hart because they do not want to accept the full glory of god, and are unable to grasp that you do not eternal torment to worship god as he is the highest good already
>>18503082*do not need eternal torment
