In 1964, California put up a ballot measure called Proposition 14. This measure amended the state constitution to allow private entities to refuse selling property to anyone they wish, including on racial grounds. This came after lobbying from real estate agencies that claimed prices were collapsing due to migration of southern blacks into californian cities. Proposition 14 passed with 65% of voters voting yes, and 35% voting no. However, despite overwhelming support from state residents, president lyndon b johnson cut off all federal funding from california, and mass looting riots broke out from the black minority population. Only a few years later, the state supreme court struck down the proposition as unconstitutional, despite it passing with voter support. Saying that mexicans from present day Mexico have a right to live in California today because the territory was technically under the control of Mexico almost 200 years ago is just as insane as claiming Russians from Moscow or St. Petersburg have a right to claim residence in Alaska because it belonged to the Russian state before 1867.
