We're now on the 10th day of my daily presidents threads celebrating the 250th anniversary of the USA.
Today is John Tyler (3/29/1790 - 1/18/1862), who served as president from 1841 to 1844. He finished president Harrison's term after his unexpected death a month in office. He later was elected to the Confederate congress, but died before it held its first session.
Notable events or accomplishments during his presidency include his fallout and expulsion from the Whig Party, the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, the Treaty of Wanghia, the Dorr Rebellion, the Fremont Expeditions, the USS Princeton Disaster, and the Annexation of Texas on his last day in office.

What do you think of the only president to be buried under a foreign flag? (Confederate)

Proved what a clusterfuck the Whigs actually were.

>Tyler was a dissident Democrat who broke with Andrew Jackson for thinking he abused executive power too much and had never actually agreed with many Whig (read: ex-Federalist) policies like the BOTUS
>as soon as he's in office immediately governs like the states rights Democrat he always was and enrages Whigs in Congress by vetoing their bills left and right
>they kick out of the party in retaliation

Tyler vetoed more bills than any previous president, what's more, previous presidents had vetoed bills mainly out of constitutional concerns than mere ideological disagreement with them. The Whig Congress were outraged as they did not believe the president should veto a bill just because he didn't agree with it.
>>
>Tyler's foreign policy proved successful and productive compared to his domestic policy. Secretary of State Daniel Webster negotiated the Webster-Ashburton Treaty with England, finally settling the disputed Maine-Canada border. Webster then resigned his post, feeling a fundamental lack of ideological compatibility with the president. Diplomatic ties with China were established in 1843 and the administration declared the Hawaiian Islands a US protectorate; European encroachment on them would not be tolerated and would be considered an act of war on the United States. Tyler signed into law the bill authorizing the annexation of Texas on his last day in office.
>>
>Although the worst of the 1837 panic was over by 1841, the economy remained sluggish and would not take off until after the Mexican War when the Gold Rush brought about a new boomtime to the country. The midterm elections in 1842 saw the Whigs swept from Congress and a Democrat coalition took over for the 1843-45 Congressional session. However, the 28th Congress displayed no more interest in working with Tyler than its predecessor did; Democrat leaders were looking to promote their own presidential candidates for 1844.
>>
>Tyler met with Jackson at the Hermitage in early 1844. The 76 year old former president begged him not to run again. Tyler agreed on condition that the Democrats run a candidate who supported Texas annexation. Jackson accepted this proposal.[9]

>betrays his country
>is buried on a traitor's flag
