It seems to me the evolutionary reason for the development of consciousness is simply to predate and avoid predation. What we call sentience correlates entirely with being heterotrophic. Appealing to compassion on the basis of sentience is absolutely morally disgusting, in the grand scheme of things sentient beings are simply parasites leeching off someone else's labor, notably plants who are the real epitome of moral life and which really deserve our compassion. It takes decades for some plants to sexually mature, putting them even above humans in terms of total organism complexity, but because they live a nobler and non destructive life they are simply not perceived as significant. Being good makes you unimportant, we can probably all intuitively understand this demonic aspect of collective human culture.
