Yes, german nationalism was (the major) part of that, but it's not a huge leap to go from german nationalism to white nationalism (or frankly any kind of nationalism). Hence national socialism is considered the major alternative to what we have. Very few people earnestly and openly call themselves nazis. And those that do still differ from historic national socialism in many ways. Someone competent enough to run a country properly wouldnt let one of the most powerful nations in the world end up in that state in less than a decade. A lot of what gets attributed to "Hitler" was achieved by very few competent people within his military and party circle and not by him directly, he was just a very poorly educated prole and anyone who's read the original german text for Mein Kampft can tell that. What went wrong was what went wrong with most overly authoritarian regimes in history: Too much bickering within the party, constant nepotism and favour trading, no one speaking out against stupid decisions and a couple actual lunatics running very important affairs
