I know I'm going to sound like a moron, but I want to get into history just for the sake of it, and I want to start with world history because it makes the most sense in my mind.

I don't want to get into some yt pop history stuff, so I looked up legitimate resources. One of them was lectures by Richard Bulliet, who covers world history in two courses, from the Neolithic Revolution up to the present day.

I've finished two lectures so far, and he seems really well informed and well intentioned. He even takes a few digs at that Jeremy Dimond guy.

But I was curious
is there anything I should keep in mind while going through his lectures?

I am not allergic to reading anything, but
I thought having a framework would be better than jumping through a bunch of videos

Hmm… Roman Empire
Hmm… Middle Ages
Hmm… Renaissance
Or something super specific, like the Roman eagle or the importance of the number 7 in alchemy

Who the fuck uses a chalkkboard?
Is this video from the 1990s? Cause that can be a problem. A lot of new information has surfaced since then.

Having a framework?
Start with theory of history then... but that would be boring as balls to read through the history of historiography and methodologists (unless you like phrase-mongering and philosophy)
Maybe the Annalists would be a good starting point?
Bloch and his Metier de historien (dunno the title on english) or apologia to history?
Whats important, especially considering you admited this is a hobby, is to start by what interests you, because otherwise you will lose interest quickly.
Ginzburg, Le Goff... lot of very famous historians who are used as sort of archetypes for different types histories. But, really, just go with Rome or Athens or napoleon or Mao Zendong or something easier to get into. Pay attention to the historiography, not just the history itself, and you will already be a good step beyond the average pseud.
Dont be scarred to pick a primary source, but if you do, have an appropriatr accompanyjng book and always read one in context of the other.

Btw OP I study history at my university, currently in my second year.
If you want a good overview, buy the book A History Of World Societies.
It was the backbone of our reading (along with 100 other publications for more specific topics).
