Are multiethnic societies inherently unsustainable? Most people can't even be bothered to learn a second language. One culture group seems to always end up in a dominant position over others, which then adobt the dominant culture's traits. And it makes the most sense purely fro a practical point of view for there to be just one culture that everyone adheres to, for efficiency's sake.
>>18508377Well in Bohemia's case it was fairly OK before the rise of nationalism. Most people simply thought of themselves as Bohemians regardless of their mother tongue. There were some ethnic conflicts before the modern era though. During the Husdite wars, most germans stayed catholic so they were hated by the mostly hussite czechs. But I don't remember if the hate was more due to their religion or ethnicity. And IIRC one bohemian duke in the 11th or 12th century expellled all germans from bohemia, including his mother.
>>18508377Switzerland is doing fine. Belgium is doing okay...for now. It's all really matter of give and take. One, you need to create a national identity beyond whatever petty race you have living there. Two, you must guard against ethnic chauvinism. You look at places like Yugoslavia, and the place starts falling apart every time the Serbs think themselves better.
>>18508377Ethnostates make the most sense but where they end up failing is neighbors don't get along because of one or both feeling superior to the other
they werent in the past. After the standardization of language and rise of nation-states, yes.
>>18509293you're forgetting that in the past, a large territory was difficult to govern centrally for infrastructure reasons. how direct do you think ottoman rule was in mountainous areas of the balkans/anatolia before the railroad and telegraph? not very, locals lived more or less under their own customary laws and simply paid tribute to turkish governors. when means of transport/communication were made trivial, those minorities became very easy to squeeze and nationalism flared up in response. now imagine the level of autonomy such disparate communities enjoyed during the middle ages or earlier, despite nominally being part of some huge "multiethnic" empire, and it becomes easy to imagine why everyone seemed to get along.
>>18509293>After the standardization of language and rise of nation-states, yes.Even those are pretty iffy but we can say the same about any human state structure
>>18508388Switzerland is notoriously decentralized though. Multiethnic states "work" when they're a loose association and boundaries are respected, places like Yugoslavia (and Austria-Hungary) failed because the core tried to enforce its will on the periphery.
>>18508388Im offically bilingual cities in Switzerland the people will refuse to speak each other's language and so everything is done in English from government functions on down. And Belgium is only ok because the flemish rioted in the 60s. The Belgium government already reduced at least 2 languages to a near dead state
>>18508377>>18509524>Austria-Hungary centralizedA simple solution: created pidgin language of Latin
>>18509528>And Belgium is only ok because the flemish rioted in the 60s.The ethnic chauvinism of the flemish is off the roof though.
>>18510257kys frenchtard
>>18510265see...
"I no belgian" "onions flamenco" trying to Waterzooi that shit off "belga nunca"
>>18508388>Belgium is doing okay...for now.Belgium is a profoundly divided country kept together by 3 things:1) The EU2) The capital city being heavily French-speaking but surrounded by Dutch-speaking land, thus making partition difficult3) The football team, when it wins something
>>18510257The french speakers in Belgium rioted over the flemish being treated fairly
>>18508388Switzerland is not multiethnic, they cluster together genetically.
>>18510758Belgium clusters even more
>>185102884) The monarchy.
>>18508377>Are multiethnic societies inherently unsustainable?Yes. In modern times, every linguistic group wants their own government.
>>18510750based if true
>>18510835screaming id rather speak Arabic than dutch isn't based
>>18510758most europeans cluster together genetically
>>18510758This is peak Ameriposting. >b-but how are they different cultures if they look like each other I bet you believe that Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks are genetically distant; or Finns, Sami and Suomenruotsi; or Gagauz, Romanians and Székely; or Catalans, Castilians and Galicians; or Irishmen, Welshmen and Englishmen. Hating each other because you look different is the exception. The rule is hating people who look like you.
