In august 1917, houston police arrested a black US soldier for the alleged mistreatment of a woman. However, during the arrest, escalation led to the man being pistol whipped and injured. News of the assault spread to the nearby army camp where black soldiers decided to mutiny as a response. They marched to the police station and fired upon white civilians. 11 white people and several police officers died.
