Would we call the ancient Romans and Greeks white by today's standards? Not like how we refer to blonde hair/blue eyed/pale skin Anglo-Germans as white, but like how we refer to Nixon as a white man.
"White" simply means the most technologically advanced European ethnicities, the more technologically advanced you are the whiter you are, and the less technologically advanced you are the less white you are.
