>claims to have no desires (freedom of desire = the end goal of Buddhism)
>has a desire of making a huge spectacle of burning himself alive for a cause

Maybe he just did so on a completely disinterested whim
>>
>>18511270
So for no reason at all he just randomly decided to burn himself alive, and it just so happened that there were cameras around, and people and everything around, and it even found a way to an album cover of Rage Against the Machine?

Tell me your religion is fraud without telling me your religion is fraud.

My thought is that Buddhists are so unfulfilled and depressed that suicide under the guise of self-sacrifice is their way out.
>>
The more I study Buddhism the less it seems like a wholesome /deep mystery religion and the more it seems like a strange death cult to me.

Not that I blame them though. Life is shit.

Samsara to Nirvana.

Fuck it all.

>claims to have no desires
I'm pretty sure that the average Buddhist doesn't actually claim this, just like the average Christian doesn't claim to be sinless.
Besides, religion tends to be complicated. There's probably a million different sects that explain a million different paths to buddhahood. Maybe killing yourself to help others was mentioned somewhere. And you could say that he did exhibit a lack of desire for Earthly things here, leaving them all behind.

>The more I study Buddhism the less it seems like a wholesome /deep mystery religion and the more it seems like a strange death cult to me.
That is because it is a strange death cult. They renounce life. To them life is an infernal wheel of death and rebirth. The goal is basically inner death. I don't think Buddhism is for everyone because it is obviously life denying. No one would do shit and we would go extinct if we all tried to liberate ourselves through some badass epiphany or whatever the fuck.
>Not that I blame them though. Life is shit.
Life is shit, and yes, ultimately people are free to believe whatever stupid shit they want. I personally do not value a philosophy that places so much value on states of mind only a handful of people can realize. That's retarded. I want to live my life, not sit in a cave somewhere until I hallucinate.

>They renounce life
Buddha denounced extreme ascetism and purposed the "middle way" for this exact reason.
>I don't think Buddhism is for everyone because it is obviously life denying
Its really not, most people will achieve nirvana through interaction with society and unique tests/circumstances. Buddha didn't call his follower to denounce life and withdraw from society, in fact he tried extreme ascetism and realized its flaws and reengaged with society.

>作是供養已 從三昧起 而自念言 我雖以神力 供養於佛 不如以身供養
Having completed these offerings, he arose from samadhi, and thought to himself: "Though I have made offering to the Buddha using my spiritual powers, it is no comparison to making offerings of my own body."
>即服諸香 栴檀薰陸 兜樓婆 畢力迦 沈水膠香 又飲瞻蔔 諸華香油 滿千二百歲已 香油塗身 於日月淨明德佛前 以天寶衣 而自纏身 灌諸香油 以神通力願 而自燃身 光明遍照 八十億 恒河沙世界
He then imbibed all incenses of sandalwood, olibanum, frankincense, clove, aloeswood, and glue tree, and drank also the fragrant oil of campaka flowers, for 1,200 years, before covering himself in fragrant oil, and in presence of the Buddha Candrasūryavimalaprabhāsaśrī, wrapped his body in heavenly jeweled robes, and by the transcendent powers of his vows burst spontaneously into flame, widely illuminating 80 kotis of Ganges sands of worlds.
>其中諸佛 同時讚言 善哉善哉 善男子 是真精進 是名真法 供養如來 若以華香 瓔珞燒香 末香塗香 天繒幡蓋 及海此岸 栴檀之香 如是等 種種諸物 供養 所不能及 假使國城 妻子布施 亦所不及
The Buddhas of these worlds all at once praised him, saying: "Splendid, splendid, good sir! This is true effort, this is the true Dharma! In making offering to the Tathagata, whether through flower fragrance, jewels, the burning of incense, all powdered incense or perfumes, through heavenly banners or canopies, or sandlewood fragrance of the sea's near shore, all types of offering such as these could never match it. Even should one do charity with kingdoms and castles, or one's own wife or child, this would still be inferior."
>善男子 是名第一之施 於諸施中 最尊最上 以法供養 諸如來故 作是語已,而各默然
"Good sir, this is the foremost charity, the most honored and supreme of all charities, for you have offered the Dharma itself to all Tathagatas." Having spoken these words, each then fell silent.

I like how the mods just let the botfarm charged with ruining this board make a dozen of these obvious spambot threads.
