south africa was useful to US and NATO during cold war, so they looked the other way on aparthied n shiet. but when cold war ended, west told suth avrikah they were "no longer useful to us"
so, they were basically gonna be isolated like rhodesia. so ruling whites decided to cut their losses and negotiate to avoid scenario like rhodesian bush war.
