In 1919, black beachgoers walked onto the white side of the beach, and arguments ensued. Soon, white and black beachgoers started throwing stones at each other, when a black teenager got caught in the crossfire while swimming and drowned. Blacks blamed one white man for the stone throwing, but the whites blamed a black man. Police refused to arrest the white man, and arrested the black man which sparked outrage. Large black crowds gathered to hamper police movement in protest, and then one black man suddenly fired at the cops. He was quickly shot to death. This enflamed tensions further and now blacks started attacking random whites, and stabbed 4 white people to death. The deaths of the 4 whites rallied the whites to action. Gangs of white youth started beating up every single black person they saw. Blacks were pulled out of streetcars and clubbed to death. Black buissinesses were looted and burnt. Meanwhile, black residents also started to beat up white passerby, killing many. This was a 4 day 'race war' where whites and blacks fortified themselves in their part of the city, and attacked anyone of the opposite race. However, in the end the black residential areas suffered far more damage and more blacks were killed. The riot ended when the state guard was called in. The cops over which the conflict started were acquited of wrongdoing. What is interesting is that depsite the bilateral nature of the riot, wikipedia makes it sound very one sided. Most modern sources obfuscate the role of the blacks and call it a racist white supremacist pogrom. Are many race riots before 1950 like this?

From the 1960s on it was let the blacks burn down the ghetto and hope you’re not a random white caught up in the chaos, while the cops and in worst cases the National Guard keep things contained. In the past it was black and white private citizens going at each other with cops and other government forces on Team White. Despite more legal segregation, blacks and working class whites lived in close proximity and shared public space prior to suburban sprawl. Blacks had access to guns and weren’t afraid to use them and whites hadn’t lost their willingness to do violence outside of legal norms. Detroit 1943 was the last big old school racial brawl, then after a couple of decades of relative calm the new model emerged—blacks rampage in the city, whites hunker down in the burbs, government forces contain the chaos until it burns out.
