Regional ambitions overrode pan-arabism, especially after Israel showed that even a united arab army couldn't defeat them. Ba'athists and Nasserists hated each other from day one, and Syrian and Iraqi ba'athists hated each other. The Syrian-Egyptian unified state lasted less than three years before the Syrians got sick of being pushed around by Egypt. It was dead on arrival.
