One thing that always fascinated me about the Cambodian genocide was that the Khmer Rouge murdered Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Serey Sothea, the two biggest pop singers in the country. It would be like if America had a revolution tomorrow and Taylor Swift and Morgan Wallen were both disappeared.
Let me preface this by saying I know absolutely nothing about these people.However, I can just tell by the font that both were backed by the CIA and were affiliated with the contemporary American "counter-culture".While I despise and condemn communists in general, I can ascertain that much.

American style music became particularly popular because the US set up rock radio in Vietnam which reached Cambodia. Sinn Sisamouth went from doing 50s ballads like Elivis Presley to working with a psychedelic rock band on his later singles. People all across Cambodia would listen to their songs on the radio. Even peasants would share a radio between a few families and sit around it. Sisamouth and Serey Sothea were both from the countryside. Sisamouth got his break because he sang for the royal family and they loved him and helped him, and then he made Serey Sothea famous by dueting with her hundreds of times. The mix of American rock with Southeast Asian melodies and instruments is really cool to me.They were certainly privileged and influenced by America music from the most glow infested time period, but considering that they were discovered and promoted by the royal family, who the CIA was actively working to undermine at that time in support of a more anti-communist government, they surprisingly were not glowies.
