The Anglos saved Japan from the evil Spanish and Portugays who wanted to plague Japan by converting it to Catholicism and turning it into a shithole like the Philippines. If Japan is living in a peaceful advance ethnonation still kept in touch with their roots, they have the Brits to thank.

I get tge feeling Nobunaga would have massacred Christians with or without his novelty Englishman.

Nobunaga was pretty cozy with the Portuguese, seemed to have some sort of admiration for Christianity (even if he didn't belive in the religion), and had a pretty contentious relationship with the Japanese Shinto-Buddhist establishment. Hideyoshi and Tokugawa were the ones who persecuted Christians.

It's highly unlikely that the Portuguese/Spanish would have been able to actually conquer Japan even without William Adams. And likewise, the established Japanee classe had reasons to suppress christianity independent of papist imperialism.
Also, the philippines being a shithole is independent of Spanish colonization. Spanish colonial presence in the philippines is vastly exaggerated before the 19th century. It was basically a city state based around Manila and a bunch of client kings.

>"But we have catholic japan at home"
How do you respond without sounding mad?

I have a question that is only tangentially related. Famously, the Japanese tortured Jesuits who illegally came into Japan and executed them if they did not renounce their faith. However, a few of those priests did renounce their catholicism, and the Japanese state housed and granted them a stipend for this. My question is, why did they do this? I dn't understand why.

We Englishmen have literally NEVER been in the wrong
