Why did they immediately start to decline as soon as europeans circumnavigated africa and began trading directly with asia?
Were they really that reliant on acting as a giant tollbooth for trade between europe and asia?

The Mamluks? Losing the trade revenue certainly didn't help but the Ottomans were a legitimately mighty opponent and Egypt continued being rich for much of their rule
