How did liberals move from particularism to universalism? The republican nation-state was created by liberals that believed ethnic groups should live in seperate political entities and collectively govern themselves instead of a king ruling over various people. Loyalty was to be around a group identity, hence the basis of nation. Allowing people outside the group into the system of governance will lead to its collapse. Essentially, democracy IS a people. However, modern liberals take the opposite stance. The believe democracy needs to reject group identity to function. If anyone is excluded from governance, then democracy will fall apart, instead of the reverse as old liberals believed. Most will subtly argue that anyone in the world should be allowed to come to a country and be allowed to vote minutes after they arrive, or it is a violation of democratic ideasHow and when did liberal principles reverse?
