You walk up to a muslim or jew, ask them if a thing is right or wrong, he tells you what his book says is to be done to the sinner in that specific situation as spoken by god and ellaborated on by the rabbis or fiqh, you walk up to a christian, he tells you said thing is wrong referring his book as well but not specifically what is to be done, only that it is a moral principle of god.

But what will the buddhist do? What does his religion, on a day-to-day basis actually consist of?.

Buddhism, stripped of minutiae, teaches that all of reality is merely reality experiencing itself through reality.
The goal would not be "nothingness" but "emptiness". To be stripped of all presupposition. Only then can you see things for what they really are.
Unfortunately without the minutiae this leads to societies which stagnate and focus on doing nothing at all. Sort of like the Buddha. There is some value, however, in the Buddhist practice of taking temporary monastic vows to gain a greater understanding of the basic principle: be empty; have no presuppositions.

Everyone knows all about "desire" and "suffering" in Buddhism, which are only the inroads to the truth about emptiness. Eventually you are meant to stop caring about the problem of suffering in the first place.

THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPT OF BUDDHISM IS SUFFERING; AROUND IT ORBIT ALL BUDDHISTIC CONCEPTS, AND FROM SUFFERING IS ITS ETHOS DERIVED.

BUDDHISM CAN BE REDUCED TO THIS SENTENCE: «CAUSE NO SUFFERING».

THE PROBLEM IS THAT LIFE ITSELF ENTAILS SUFFERING; IT IS A PART OF REALITY, OF EXISTENCE, THEREFORE, IN BUDDHISM, REALITY IS FUNDAMENTALLY EVIL, AND SOMETHING FROM WHICH TO ESCAPE; THIS RESULTS IN A LIFEDENYING ETHOS, AND A NIHILISTIC MORALITY, IN CONJUNCTION WITH DEMONWORSHIP.

Early christians used castrate themselves for the same reason. Various sects practiced this form of severe asceticism to achieve a monastic ideal. Even Origen of Alexandria parted with his.. manhood
Wasn't until the first council of nicea in 325AD that it was banned.

Stop screaming. You misunderstood the post. That practice stemmed from an interpretation of your scripture that called for manasticisim.

But the fundamental belief that creation had an original, natural, remaining form to it persisted and eventually crushed and outlawed the life-denying gnosticism. Islam, in a way, can be seen as swinging further in this direction into arguing that there was no original sin and that humans independently reach sin not because of a fallen nature but an individual non-adherence to allah but other things (hence the emphasis on idolatry)

Christians have historically had this internal discussion of countering between the jewish idea that "to be good is to follow rules set by God" and a more greek idea of "to be good is to love your neighbor", and its hard to say either side completely denied the other, only the extremes that either went back to judaism or declared satan created the world

> But what will the buddhist do?
a good buddhist would do the same: contrast the thing with the books, the suttas. then define if the thing is good or bad for the path.
> What does his religion, on a day-to-day basis actually consist of?
abandon what is unwholesome, and developing what is wholesome.

Buddhism is characterized by the belief that reality is characterized by a lack of essencehood and that the belief that one is an essence creates suffering of multiple types. The core of Buddhist metaphysics is dependent arising which connects to the soteriological end in Buddhism, the cessation of dukkha which is sometimes understood as a type of omnscience or gnosis. Buddhism holds that there is only the apperance of efficient causes but ultimately there is nothing that can be said to be you and ultimately no causes. As a whole, all the Buddhist traditions hold that there practices are a technology to end dukkha.

Here is part 2 of both as well as a video that explains Buddhist accounts of metaphysical antifoundationalism, the view in general that reality has no foundations. Some Buddhist traditions that this more of a gnosis of that one so to speak realizes upon the cessation of dukkha. The first in general and the second explores accounts in Far East Asian Buddhism.

One way to think about it is that in Buddhism the utlimate goal is not being something or going to place or relating to something but disspelling a deeply entrenched cognitive error caused by a belief that you are an essence or substance and in many traditions that there are any essences or substances at all that one could be. Their view of texts or practices reflects that idea that as well and hence why different practices work because they reflect the different types of delusions sustaining that general error.

Buddhists have even more books about what is naughty and what is nice than yahwists. So they'd probably reference those. They even have fairly precise descriptions of what specific actions result in which specific punishments in hell. As for day to day practice, it is likewise rather similar. Avoid doing the things the religion says are bad. Do the things the religion says are good.

Little different in ethics. They have precepts and vows which one must consent to take and virtues that are held to arise causally. They do not have a deontological account of ethics. As long a practioner does not commit the 10 non-virtious actions.

The three bodily actions are killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. The four verbal actions are lying, divisive speech that creates conflict, harsh or abusive speech, and idle or frivolous chatter that lacks purpose or mindfulness. The three mental actions are covetousness (craving what belongs to others), ill will (wishing harm upon others), and wrong view, particularly the denial of moral causation and ethical responsibility with belief in a substantial soul being also often listed.

It is also worth noting that some traditions hold that one does not actually practice the ethics to do them but simply realizes them as one removes ignorance automatically.I meant to say as long as a person does not commit the 10 non-virtious actions it is held to be enough to usually avoid a hell realm. It is worth noting that there hermeneutic is nothing like a literalist view such as found in Protestantism or Islam or even like a tradition like Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy. They have a reliablist and coherentist epistemology reflecting their metaphysical anti-realism.

Asking a layman buddhist would vary widely per region, as Buddhism largely syncretises with local beliefs (at least for East Asia, used to be applicable to Mainland Southeast Asia until places like Thailand were forced to reorganise the religion under modernisation pressures) and it becomes apart of the spiritual practices of the region, with each person choosing how much buddhist practices they want to apply to their moral compass and teachings, just like how Taoism/Daoism, Confucianism. It would be better to ask a Buddhist monk
