What is the ultimate text to learn about Confucian values and scholars in the 5th and 4th centuries BC? Italian translation would be helpful but English and Chinese can work too
The core Confucian canon across China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam historically centered on the same classical Chinese texts, especially the Four Books (The Great Learning, Doctrine of the Mean, Analects, and Mencius) and the Five Classics (Classic of Poetry, Book of Documents, Book of Changes, Book of Rites, and Spring and Autumn Annals). However, the commentaries on these differed and each developed different commentaries which from what I understand are pretty intense. All four regions studied largely the same texts. The differences arose not from entirely different canons but from which commentaries, interpretations, and supplementary works became authoritative.
