Why did they call it the First World War? Wasn't that just asking for trouble and a second one? They should have called it The Last World War and avoided a second one
They didn't, it was The Great War or The War to End All Wars. They were actually optimistic about it being the last war that ever needed to be fought.
>>18519041They never called it that retard
>>18519060And that was true within western Europe, there haven't been more wars of England and France and Germany against each other
>>18519060>>18519091>The earliest known use of the term First World War appeared in September 1914,I accept both of your concessions and apologies historylets
>>18519041Why didn't England just let Germany take France and Belgium?
>>18519097>hat was true within western Europe, there haven't been more wars of England and France and Germany against each other? What about 1940 and 1944-45?
>>18519041>>18519226They were calling it the first world war like the first WORLDWIDE war ever, as in all wars up to this point had just been confined to regions but now this one was happening all over the planet. They weren't calling it first world war as in the first of a series.
>>18519495Why didn't Germany just not invade France and Belgium?
>>18519495They had a military alliance that they honored. Asking this question just proves you don't have a concept of honor, but that is expected of somebody who defends Germans.
>>18519592But seriously. Wouldn't the 20th century have been better if the UK stayed freunds with Germistan, let them take France in a few months, avoid a four year war, then the next few centuries could be dominated by a US-UK-Germany alliance, without the insane world wars. No one was smart enough to figure this out before the 1910s, that we know of I guess. In hindsight though, it would be the REAL 1000-year Reich. Who the fuck could stop the US-UK-Germany alliance? No one, ever.
>>18519592Every ww1 historian will tell you UK would have found a way into the war even if Belgium wasnt invaded.UK wasnt going to sit by and watch Germany win, not after that open naval rivalry. UK already knew Germany was far stronger from the 1870 war with France, and the Russian defeat in 1904. UK game has always been to side with the underdog to prevent the strong from getting stronger. In this case it was Germany, and Germany had shown open rivalry towards the UK in the likes France never did long before 1914.
>>18519634The thing with alliances is that they're not eternal and no one pretends like they are eternal. Making a strong Germany stronger isnt in UK interest even if they are BFF for the time being.
