Breaking the Jim Crow South's labyrinthine racial codes could and often did end very badly. One morning in early July 1933, a black schoolteacher named Elizabeth Lawrence was walking along a country lane near Birmingham, Alabama. A group of white children approached and started heckling and throwing things at her. As a teacher and mother herself, Lawrence understood children well and she promptly scolded them for their rowdiness. This proved to be a fatal mistake. The children ran off to tell their parents. A short while later, a group of armed men arrived at Lawrence's home and shot her dead.Her son Alexander wanted charges to be filed against his mother's killers but he received threats and ended up leaving the area and moving north to Chicago. Elizabeth Lawrence thus became one of four lynching victims in Alabama during 1933.

The other 50% was to stamp out any sort of accruement of Black financial/political/social power however and whenever it might arise, even if it was happening purely among Blacks.
