Historically anything east of the Oder was "east". 95% of the people there lived in serfdom (slavery) up until the 19th century, trade was limited and political instability frequent because of flawed political structure ("Polish Parlament" is a mockery term of a failed state because it was the reason the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth was unable to survive).From a modern perspective Poland is part of the west and the country has achieved western living standards and GDP growth.

Poland and the entire Central Europe is its own thing, really. Culturally they aren't really Eastern, but not quite Western either (due to be very conservative). From the Central European countries the most Western country is probably Czechia.
