Why did Hong Kong think it was a good idea to trade British rule for Chinese rule? Did they honestly think China would treat them better?
>>18524559it was less that than no other choice. the Chinese would use military force to retake the place if all else failed.
It was a done deal. Britain dishonouring the deal wouldn't have ended well for them.
>>18524559Hong Kong didn't have much of a choice in the matter, it was a colony. Aside from that, in 1997 most of the territory reverted to the chinese, leaving the remainder completely unviable, it just wasn't possible to keep it up any longer without it being an illegal occupation that would prompt military action.
>>18524559They didnt
It wasn't a choice, China threatened to blockade them, shut off their water, and shell the city
>>18524559They didnt. The brits were just in a shit position in the 80s
>>18524559It was and is widely seen as a tragedy. Few were cheering for the forced reunion with China.
>>18524559The 99 year lease was ending on the mainland section and what would be left would be untenable so they agreed to hand it all over in 1997 for an agreement of an additional 50 years of self rule that ends in 2047 but China is already subverting it with plants in the city gov
>>18524559What the fuck do you mean by that, it was a 99 year lease. There wasn't a choice. It always was colonized Chinese land and it was returned.
>>18524559The British only straight up owned Hong Kong island, all the rest of the colony's territory was a 99 year lease and once the lease was up, China would take it back and without the rest of the land, Hong Kong island would no longer be viable, as there's barely any water on the island and with a bazillion people living there, no where to grow food not to mention needing the mainland for apartments, factories, warehouses, etc.Now the Brits could have made a deal with Taiwan to keep all the colony, saying they were the real government of China but by then, everybody knew this was nonsense and China could have relentlessly fucked with Hong Kong (without actually invading) to the point the colony again wouldn't have been viable.tl;dr the Bongs fucked up in 1897 by not making the entire colony British forever.
>>18524559Hong Kong doesn't have an army ergo it doesnt have a choice
>>18524991Nothing would have changed. China would still want it back and the UK would find another way to quietly cede it back to China. Losing it was humiliation enough without devolving into Goa 2.0 happen.
