What would it look like? India? Thailand? Burma?
What if the Maya did not loose their core state-building identity, and instead had succesfully adapted to the modern world? Asking this question is difficult because it's asking for things to go very differently, from the conquest not happening to a Caste War victory. But what would you believe so?

Cucked catholic state that speaks Spanish with a side identity as indigenous that gets bullied by its neighbors and somehow the indigenous people get oppressed by the indigenous people who run the country except they speak Spanish.

this is rather answering if the region unites today out of nowhere, not if the region had not lost its identity to begin with

The Mayans were connected only culturally, even with its ‘unifications’, it was simply just an agreement between city states just like how Champa were. I’d imagine if they’d remain independent, they’d have a more decentralised government like Indonesia or India. They’ll create a synthetic Mayan Language that all Mayans understand like Standard Arabic or China’s attempt at a central language. Aspects of its culture, language script, religion, etc depend on when you’d want this change to take place. They’ll probably centralise their religion if they did not become a colony, like Japan or Thailand since their priestly class was quite powerful socially.

>The Mayans were connected only culturally,
That's pretty much enough, it hurts my autism that they as of this day and age do not share a country at all. Plus it has much prettier borders
So in short, it'd look like an Asian country.

It would be a complete shithole like any other latinx failed state
>>
>>18526856
suggesting it would be a latinx state is failing to read the whole question
what's the attention span of this board nowadays?

This board is 90% comprised of /pol/ and /int/ spillovers, don't expect much

mayanx are not known for killing each other en masse unlike other latinx doe

Nothing’s fair in life. Kinda hurts me that outside of Asia, every other continent conquered by Europeans just had their culture rehashed by them, similar culture, same religions, etc.

It'd just be a greater Guatemala. There was already the Federal Republic of Central America which was your map plus El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, and it fell apart in the 1840s. Assuming your pic stays intact, I'd just assume it'd be the same as Guatemala's historical trajectory but with even more ethnic skirmishes
>>
>>18529337
The contexts of the United Provinces of Central America and the hypothetical of a united Mayan nation are wildly different. The only thing that is true is that it would have ethnic skirmishes.

Nah I doubt it
>ultra Catholic
>stagnates for a while because Mexico imports everything they do but better
>except for bananas
>80-100 years of banana exploitation and CIA o algo operations
>Mexicans will treat Maya Guatemala like they treat modern Guatemala, the Mexico of Mexico so to speak

Only way it'd be that substantially different is if the Spanish didn't colonize it, in which case it'd take on the identity of whoever colonized it or whoever's sphere of influence it was in if they had a best case scenario

Thailand but in Latin America instead of SEA.

either a chiapas lacandon jungle but bigger ie a giant anarchist commune with completely static economy or an assortment of tiny fiefdoms like oaxaca

Guatemala with better beaches.

Possibly communist.
