call Mao's bluff and invade the north after wiping Hanoi off the map
>>
>>18527188
If it failed in 1950 why would it succeed in 1965
>>
>5 million screaming Chinamen flood into north vietnam
now what

The Chinese hated the Vietnamese and the Soviets were cucks who didnt like Mao. Unironically you could noooook but the whole Cold War was a farce made by the global elite together.
>>
>>18527192
They tried that in 1979 and it didn't really work now did it?
>>
>>18527188
it was a bluff. Mao told Edgar Snow that they had no intention of fighting the US unless American troops actually crossed into Chinese territory.
>>
>>18527188
that would have unironically worked

Compared with the Korean War,

>China does not have experienced troops over 15 years later from the civil war, it's a completely different generation of soldiers
>the Vietnam border area is remote and not near any major Chinese population centers, it has few roads and is hard for an army to maneuver in
>it does not contain strategically important assets like the Yalu dams
>China is engulfed in the chaos of the Cultural Revolution
>Vietnam is not a historical ally/satellite of China as Korea was
>the Sino-Soviet split has happened, China must keep a significant amount of troops up north to watch the Soviet border and are limited in how many troops could be used to confront the US military
>the US military this time would be expecting a Chinese attack and know how to prepare for it
>China's usual major logistical shortcomings and difficulties feeding and equipping troops
>>

>>the Sino-Soviet split has happened
This fact made Nixon visit China instead changing the course of the entire cold war. It was far more substantial than Vietnam.

I think the LBJ administration weren't that afraid of anything China might do but they could use it as an excuse to not expand the war. Especially because the US military in Vietnam didn't actually have many combat troops, most of it was logistics and the combat outfits were not enough to invade the DRV. There were never more than 25,000 combat personnel in Indochina at peak strength.

The original hope was that US boots would only be on the ground until the South Vietnamese regime stabilised to the point it could handle things, with US forces being deployed only in the aftermath of Diem being toppled (IIRC the US military gave the South Vietnamese government six months until it collapsed without US soldiers on the ground), under Diem US military support was limited to 'combat advisors' (special forces, pilots, and training staff/actual advisors)

So much preventing red menace.

The Korean War drafted way more men than Vietnam. LBJ didn't want to expand the war too much and disrupt the good economic times the US was enjoying in the 60s.

War production was a good part of the 60s economic boom along with supporting the space program. The dial-back of the Vietnam war and the space program in the 70s were a good part of why the economy crumbled, because a lot of people had been employed supporting them and were now laid off.
