>>18528652I think the LBJ administration weren't that afraid of anything China might do but they could use it as an excuse to not expand the war. Especially because the US military in Vietnam didn't actually have many combat troops, most of it was logistics and the combat outfits were not enough to invade the DRV. There were never more than 25,000 combat personnel in Indochina at peak strength.
