There's absolutely biting insects in the wild, but if you're a primitive you tend not to have any reason to loiter around, or create, the same shallow pools of water that spawn mosquitos uncontested. Bodies of water like that are typically sullied/noxious, so you avoid them anyway, and your small gardens don't need that level of irrigation, so it's a non-issue. Failing these measures: a lot of primitive peoples also regularly smothered themselves in clay, mud, or animal fat, to protect themselves from biting insects and then sun. Supposedly pretty good for the skin and hair - I've yet to see any primitives with bad skin or bad hair.
