But it was never actually administrated directly by the British as a colony, because of its location deep in Spain's sphere of influence and its use as a pirate haven they didn't want to really claim direct ownership of it, so in practice the people of Belize were fully autonomous, and actually spent more time toadying up to the Spanish than the British. They very nearly fought a rebellion when Britain did finally annex them formally because of the ban on slavery that Britain was enforcing.

Plantation Style economies demand a huge amount of back-breaking Labor that had to come from somewhere. In Mexico and the Andes the native population was massive enough, even after the plagues, for that role, but elsewhere you had to import Blacks or Indians for that role.
