Historically, what made women unable to draw real bows, and how were Scythian/Steppe women different?
>>18529866Having to raise kidsScythian women didn't have many kids so that's why steppe nomads were always small populations when compared to settled states
>>18529881>men: it's da jooooz>women: it's da keeeedz
>>18529883Okay wise guy what did you want as an answer? Social economic factors?
>>18529885there is a peculiar property about bows, the draw length is fixed by human body size, so it has a fixed power threshold below which it won't work as a functional weapon against real life targets. men can easily pull above this threshold, most women never will and those those that do will barely reach it. women also have shorter draw lengths so their bows would have to be slightly stronger than men's to offset this. it's simple mechanics
>>18529866Anyone can draw a weak bow. A small child could draw a 20lb draw, and a 40lb (a youth bow) is powerful enough to kill large game or people at considerable distances. Turns out a flying knife is dangerous. Any woman with decent arms could use a weak bow, and many did in other cultures (like medieval Europe or Japan). They just didn't go on the frontline for cultural factors and their archery was primarily defensive in nature.Just because 80-100 warbows existed doesn't mean they were the standard.
>>18529917>Just because 80-100 warbows existed doesn't mean they were the standard.Still, no woman can ever draw that. It's a safe male white hobby at least, and bowmaking is even whiter and manlier
>>18529866Men are just stronger. But recurve bows are also a better design than longbows.
>>18529947Why don't Hadzas make recurves?
>>18529917>Just because 80-100 warbows existed doesn't mean they were the standard. They were the standard for the English during the Hundred Years War.
>>18529963I guess nobody taught them how to make them?Recurve bows were usually composite bows, made from bovine horns, wood and sinews glued together. Those materials should be available in Tansania. Longbows are way easier to make.
>>18529866>Historically, what made women unable to draw real bowsThey were 70kg draw weights.> how were Scythian/Steppe women different? They weren't.>>18529917They were closer to 100 - 160 lbs.
>>18530338I remember reading that people of the steppe had slightly better diets which allowed them to be on average taller/stronger than other groups. That could be complete bullshit though as I don't remember where I read it.
>>18529963Recurve bows are composite bows, meaning they're made from different materials. Longbows are self bows, meaning they're carved from a single piece of wood. Generally speaking, manufacturing self bows is a lot easier, and doesn't require very many specialized tools or skills to make a simple, effective weapon. There's a high skill ceiling to bow-making, obviously, as with any craft. A master bowyer will know how to tell superior wood from crap wood, will better understand how much of the wood you can shave away to make the bow lighter, without compromising its durability, will know how to balance and shape it for easier use, and how to properly tailor it to the dimensions of the archer who uses it. But a composite bow? To even make one that wouldn't immediately fall apart upon drawing it, you have to be a competent artisan, used to working not just with wood, but animal bones, sinews, and glues. You'd have to understand more than just wood, more than just bone, but how the tensile strength of these components work and support one another. And that's just the baseline for the materials, then you have actually shaping the weapon to most effectively use the strength of those materials. The shape of a recurve bow is, as the name suggests, distinctive and different from the simple stave of a self bow. It's not something a first-time maker would easily or intuitively grasp.Essentially, a recurve bow is a product of long tradition, and knowledge of their making is passed down from master to apprentice.
>>18529866Woman can draw "real" bows. An 80 pounder is basically pussy weight and any healthy person that does even a little bit of labour (something like farming) can learn to safely draw it week tops. People just vastly overestimate how hard it is without even touching a bow in their life.
