It was a fairly claimed spoil of war, and the US had no obligation at all to return it to Denmark. They did so as a gesture of goodwill, on the condition the US could maintain a presence there to help safeguard the North Atlantic. US presence in the Atlantic for the past 80 years means that Russia could not brazenly sail its warships and submarines wherever it liked, and this is a fact that I think many Europeans have come to take for granted.
