>Leland Morris served as the American chargé d'affaires in Germany beginning October 1940; the US had not had a full ambassador in Berlin since Hugh Wilson was recalled by President Roosevelt in November 1938 for being excessively cozy with the Nazi regime, even attending the annual Nuremberg rally two months earlier.

>Germany declared war on the United States December 11, 1941, three days after the US declaration of war on Japan. Morris was summoned to the office of Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop, who read the declaration of war aloud and yelled "Your president wanted his war, now he has it!" The US diplomatic corps was detained at a resort in Bad Nauheim. While they had a comparatively high degree of freedom of movement, the diplomats were poorly fed and suffered from malnourishment. They were transferred to neutral Portugal in May 1942 and then to the US on the liner SS Drottningholm where they were exchanged for German prisoners.

>Morris later served as the first US ambassador to Iceland and Iran and passed away in Washington D.C. in 1950.

You declared war first, not the other way around, my good sir.

They couldn't even send them to Good Nauheim?

To be fair they may have been expecting the US to do what it did in WWI and declare war anyway at some point
