But Islam did not spread to the north side during the middle ages, instead, the North Caucasian peoples embraced Islam during the 18th and 19th century under Ottoman and Crimean influence. Excluding, notably, the southern part of Dagestan, which was Islamized very early during the age of the caliphs, because it was part of the Persian empire. And apparently the Kumyks (one of the many ethnicities inhabiting Dagestan) were Islamized during the late middle ages by the Seljuks and the Laks, which are a tiny micro-ethnie of dagestan.I really hate the caucasus.
